When specifying what it is to believe something, we mention how that item serves as a basis for reasoning. The system allows humans to think about things that do not currently exist. You might imagine a future vacation while sitting in your living room.

Consider the act of believing Paris lies north of London. Your mind holds a structure representing that fact. That structure allows you to draw inferences or act upon the world. This system supports propositional attitudes such as fear, hope, and intention. Each attitude corresponds to a unique psychological relation with a mental object. Functionalism helps define these relations by their role in the cognitive machinery. The symbol plays a specific part in how you reason or interact with your environment. Reasoning proceeds according to rules just as grammar guides speech.

Jerry Fodor championed this view most vigorously. He argued the mind manipulates mental representations to compute truth. This computational approach dominates modern cognitive science. It treats the mind like a computer running internal code. Other schools debate the exact nature of these symbols. Some question whether the system is actually linguistic at all. Is thought truly sentence-like, or does it resemble abstract imagery? Skeptics suggest neural networks might compute patterns without strict syntax.
