Ancient observers held this view with conviction, yet their belief remained false, rendering it knowledge impossible. Second, the subject must actually hold the belief. Unconscious individuals possess no cognitive states to validate. Third, the believer requires justification. A lucky gambler wins money, but this outcome does not constitute knowledge of the odds.

Edmund Gettier disrupted this tidy triad in 1963. His famous counterexamples showed that one could possess justified true belief without actually knowing anything.
