Immanuel Kant offered a sophisticated middle ground. He agreed that the judgment of taste is not logical but aesthetical. The determining ground is subjective, rooted in pleasure rather than facts. Yet Kant argued we speak as if beauty should be universal. We expect others to agree when we point out a dramatic sunset. Disagreement feels like an error rather than a mere difference of opinion. Attempts to show someone why something is beautiful imply a shared standard exists.
Total objectivity fails because beauty requires a response. A scientific instrument cannot detect grace or elegance. Total subjectivity fails because our judgments coincide to a remarkable extent. Denying the beauty of a sunset seems perverse. We respect differing tastes in ways we do not respect factual errors.
This leaves us stranded between internal feeling and external truth. Can we argue about beauty without imposing tyranny? Or does finding common ground require ignoring the individual heart? The tension remains unresolved. We act as if beauty is real while knowing it lives in our reaction. Perhaps the value lies not in solving the puzzle but in the arguing itself. We seek validation for our loves while guarding the right to feel them uniquely.
