Physicalism claims that everything which exists is ultimately physical. Philosophers use the term to describe a metaphysical stance about the nature of reality. Unlike older forms of materialism, which pictured the universe as composed of inert, tangible stuff, physicalism accommodates forces and fields. Gravity counts as physical even if you cannot hold it in your hand. The doctrine asserts that any fact about the world, including mental states, depends entirely on physical facts. Change the physical arrangement of atoms, and you change the reality. Nothing floats free of the physical base.
Otto Neurath and Rudolf Carnap introduced the label during the 1930s. Members of the Vienna Circle, these logical positivists originally framed physicalism as a linguistic thesis. They argued every meaningful statement translates into a statement about physical objects. Science provided the only valid vocabulary for describing existence. Metaphysics was dismissed as nonsense.
